Use Winfile.exe to change file associations

Question: Your column regarding changes to file extensions left out what I feel is the easiest method: Use Winfile.exe, the 16-bit file manager that comes with Win95.

Under the File menu, choose “Associate,” then either use one of the listed programs or specify the one of your choice using the “Browse” command.

This has worked on every application I’ve used it on. —S.A.

Answer: You’re right, S.A., that’s a great method to handle file associations. To use Winfile.exe, select Run from the Start menu and type C:WINDOWSwinfile.exe and hit your Enter key.

Several people suggested this method.

Personally, I like to learn new features in an operating system.

One day, winfile.exe will no longer be available because it will be phased out. I do appreciate the feedback, though.

It will sure come in handy for some folks.
